know it all, know nothing, watch the same movie

Neal Stephenson talks about the new Star Wars movies and why people either don't care about the plot holes, or they know the background so well they don't care. Turn On, Tune In, Veg Out - New York Times: In sum, very little of the new film makes sense, taken as a freestanding narrative. What's interesting about this is how little it matters. Millions of people are happily spending their money to watch a movie they don't understand. What gives?
