Lego Harpsichord. Here's me thinking the Lego card dealer I built as a kid was a pretty good job...
slashgoth.org - down, not across. hee hee hee. slashgoth. good idea for a web site, actually.
Was getting excited about this until I noticed that Brisbane gets about half the fucking program of the southern cities - Japanime 02. Fuckers. Self-important, self-fellating, superiority-complexed fuckers. I'm utterly sick of arseholes who think nothing good can exist north of Sydney.
ALA continues to freak me out by being psychic. A List Apart: CSS Design: Taming Lists. Now how did they know I've been working half of this stuff out myself? Ahh well. Now it's a nice, neat reference. Go ALA :)
Mac Hall have made an amusing post out of a well-known issue... the laws of female gaming anatomy. AKA "why the hell isn't this female melee combat sprite wearing some body armour?"
Thailand's "Q" banks on rubber bullets. 2/9/2002. ABC News Online. Life imitates art, or the other way around. You choose. Either way, don't tick this guy off or he'll fire something unlikely in your direction.
Dutch prince denounces neckties as 'snakes'. Right on, let's burn them all. Along with cummerbunds, of course.
The New York Times discusses Linux as The New Challenge to Microsoft. Saying it's a "new" challenge does push things a bit; but hey, it's a pretty good article. An interesting thought: Government agencies would save large amounts of money if they used open-source software; but they baulk since the open source movement is considered less reliable than for-profit software companies. Apart from this being crap (Micro$oft proves that having money does not ensure good product); they could always contribute something to the cause... eg. spend some of that saved money to hire some programmers......to work on open-source stuff....
Google returns accurate results: Google Search: "go to hell"
Forbes.com: Five Ways To Spend $1 Billion ...an article which says more about Betsy Schiffman than it does about anything else. Not least the use of "he" for everything; or her cliched take on each imaginary billionaire (especially the geek). Guess it proves that having money (or writing about people who do) doesn't ensure any clues or imagination.

If cats ruled the world.... cat for president? Well, we probably wouldn't have world war three on the horizon if a cat had replaced the monkey about a year ago.
NEWS.com.au | Queensland not 'Smart': report (September 17, 2002). Apparently we should base our state's self-esteem on the opinions of people who live in Sydney. Pfft, yeah sure. I think what bugs me most about this is.....well, it's NOT NEWS. We already knew Sydney people don't like Queensland (bizarre fascination with the Gold Coast aside).
The Story of Andy L's Computer (Version Oh-One). This is funny. It may move back to its original location later on.
The Adrenaline Vault | News |. Funny to think those big catridges held about the same amount as a floppy disk (or less). This is a really cool idea though! I'd even consider getting a gameboy for this.... well maybe if they release GameBoy Advance With Backlit Screen This Time.

NEWS.com.au | Kiwi kids 'can't find NZ' (September 12, 2002). Not that we can poke fun. Thanks to our inept education policies, half of Austrlia's kids can't find their arse with both hands; let alone spell anything or read a map.

Well, it's a year already. Nobody seems to know how to react, so the media is going for the carpet-bombing approach - every one of them is trying to deliver the definitive September 11 tribute. It seems to me that the year went past so quickly that it caught everyone out - the world is still dealing with what happened. Nobody was quite up to an idea for a kind of memorial day.
I just hope the world learned something, although I suspect that it didn't really.
How to watch out for printer makers' ploys. Prime examples: using "up to" when describing everything. Of course, all consumers should question "up to" descriptions, no matter where they see them. The other big printer scam is showing how well a photo was printed out - on extremely expensive photo paper, overnight.
Yahoo! News - Egypt Boasts Free Internet Service - simply costs what the phone call costs, around US$0.25/hour. The telco and the ISP split the profits. Voila, "free" net usage.
Duo Digital Frame - a neat hack allowing you to turn a cheap laptop into a digital picture frame.
- MS flips on new 'global' Windows remote-root vuln

- IT is not geeky, says industry group (nice try, that'd be like treating trenchcoats as sensible winter clothing).
- Greek govt bans all computer games (still can't believe this one... just hope Alston doesn't get ideas).
MegaTokyo - relax, we understand j00. This strip illustrates a point I made to someone a few days ago, about cordless input devices which use batteries instead of (duh...!) recharging in a cradle like a PDA.

UN to fix refugee system (September 06, 2002). You see, when the *UN* says there's a problem, it's ok. When *Australia* says there's a problem; we're committing an atrocity. "How dare you detain people who can't be identified?" I hear people cry. "Just let everyone live in your country! You've got the room!" ...what, all that desert? The bit you're complaining about because one of the detention centres is there?
Not that I think the world media did a hatchet job on Australia over all this, or anything.
BBC NEWS | Technology | AI helps gamers keep on playing. Cool idea. Now the flip side of course is the games AI can learn how to beat you, too; so many games will get smarter. More of a challenge; yes. But for newer gamers, they're going to have to eat humble pie and select "Easy" in the options.
New Scientist: 'Blank' display hides computer data . Basically a screen which can only be viewed when the user wears polarising glasses. Great idea, except for the fact that it's fairly easy to defeat. You'd need a secondary security feature; ie. someone standing around ready to clobber anyone wearing 3D movie glasses who looks like they're doing neck exercises.
Slashdot | Finding the Viscosity of Pitch UQ's pitch experiment is nearing the next drop. I used to walk past this thing a couple of times a week on the way to lectures. Never really expected to see it drop, but I always looked anyway :)

Emma nears dream job after stretching surgery. If this seems weird, think about the crap models do to their bodies. Sure, modelling would probably seem more glamourous to most people than being a flight attendant. But to each their own.
Slashdot | Robotic Photographer - claims that it can shoot a wedding just as well as a human. Maybe, I guess. Depends on how good/bad the compared human photographer was.

VisiBone Webmaster's Color Lab - exceedlingly cool.

Is that a backlash in your pocket? The Sunday Mail QLD: Man-free zone [01sep02] - several male QUT students are protesting the fact that there are no bursaries for men. There are 12 categories in the Student Guild awards - 9 for women and 3 for minority groups. That means nothing at all for your average guy. Is that equality? Anti-discrimination commissioner Karen Walters said: "Get over it, boys. "Equality doesn't mean treating everyone the same."
...funny, I thought that's exactly what it meant.
vertigo session photography. i love this pic, for instance. weird navigation though.
