This country has a crazy climate. While fires in the ACT have caused deaths, loss of homes and icons like the Mt Stromlo Observatory (ABC News - 20/01/03 : More than 400 homes destroyed in ACT fires); rain in Queensland has eased the drought for a few lucky farmers (Qld farmers welcome soaking rain. 20/1/2003. ABC News Online). We frequently have bushfires (a.k.a. firestorms) and floods at the same time; sometimes not even that far away from each other.
