#1 IMO is more interesting, and has a tidier background ind is overall a cleaner image. #2 is the only one that you can really make out what you're looking at, but I find the crop on the ring annoying, and the detail in the rock is quite distracting.

To be honest though, neither photo does a lot for me.

They both lack visual balance and seem very amateurish because of that. Although I agree the one with short DoF is better.
