reCAPTCHA: Stop Spam, Read Books. This is a totally awesome idea. The service takes passages with missed words from OCRed books and uses them as CAPTCHAs. So, over time the missed words are filled in by users. The CAPTCHA is verified from the correctly captured words.
Happiness plummets with kids' arrival | NEWS.com.au: US and European studies had shown that people's happiness did spike while they were expecting a baby but sharply plummeted after the child was born. The low point came when children reached the ages of 12-16, and recovered only when they had flown the coop. Ever noticed how many parents just say rather non-specifically that kids will "change your life"? :)
Game violence claims debunked by experts | NEWS.com.au: BOYS who don't play videogames at all are at greater risk of getting into trouble than those who play violent games occasionally, according to two Harvard psychologists. The pair also said there was also no evidence to suggest violent games turn young people into criminals or violent people, despite some media reports. Interestingly they found that kids (both boy and girls) playing adult rated games did tend to get into fights more. The conclusion there is that ratings are a good thing - and don't let your 12yo play an 18+ rated game. They also found serious social misfits might play games but their problems aren't caused by those games. Whodathunkit?
