around the traps
- Now you can 'print' guns at home | Space, Military and Medicine | News.com.au. Sketchy on details - eg. I highly doubt you can 3D print things like the *barrel* out of plastic stock (yet). It does remind me of the characters discussing a cheap 'make your own' assault rifle, in a Neal Stepehenson novel (Crypto, I think); the idea being it would allow oppressed groups of people to fight back. Worth noting the discussion in the book put the barrel as a serious stumbling block. Still, it seems we're a step closer to the day when home manufacturing gets serious. If someone manages to create an accessibly-priced 3D printer that can work with metal, it's on... everyone will be able to make their own *whatever*, just as soon as a suitably motivated geek takes an original apart and posts the specs.
